How to Help Ease Cold Symptoms

It’s that time of year when colds are rife. If you have been struck down with the lurgy, we have a few tips to help you get over your cold.


First and foremost, get as much rest as you can. If you are feeling more tired than usual, take stock and accept that if your body is telling you you need to sleep, you need to sleep. Sleep and rest will enable your body to fight the infection causing the cold; so if you do rest, you should recover quicker.

Chances are, if you have been struck down by a cold, you might not really feel like eating or drinking, but it is imperative that you do. By staying hydrated, not only are you giving your body a chance to flush out toxins, you are also ensuring that your mucous membranes in your nose stay moist, allowing them to do their job more effectively, and trap germs!

Enjoy Chicken Soup

It might seem like an old wives tale, but chicken soup can actually make you feel better. Not only is it easily digestible (perfect if you don’t really feel like eating), the heat of it can actually help decongest you. Key ingredients in chicken soup, such as onions, garlic and additional vegetables, help to reduce inflammation in the body too, which may also help alleviate cold symptoms.


If you particularly affected by blocked, sore sinuses, its time to get to work to help clear them. Blocked sinuses can cause particularly debilitating headaches and even sore ears and teeth. To help clear them, sit in the bathroom with the shower running on hot – the moisture and heat will start to unclog your sinuses and get things moving again.

If that doesn’t seem to be doing the trick, you can try steaming your face. This is easy to do at home – just boil a kettle, pour the water into a bowl and sit with your face over the bowl and a towel over your head and breathe through your nose. Do ensure that the water isn’t too hot, however, as if it is too hot, you can damage the membranes of your sinuses and make them even more painful.

Sore Throat Treatments

If you are suffering from a sore throat, again its time to turn to traditional methods and gargle warm salty water (not suitable for children). Eat cool and soft foods that wont irritate your throat further, and suck ice cubes and lollies.

Aches & Pains

If you are suffering from aches and pains and just feel generally lousy, you can help ease these symptoms and also help bring down a fever by taking paracetamol and ibuprofen. do not exceed the stated dose, and read the guidelines first.

  • your temperature is very high or you feel hot and shivery
  • you’re concerned about your child’s symptoms
  • you’re finding it hard to breathe or develop chest pain

  • you have a weakened immune system – for example, because you’re having chemotherapy
